The Case For Your Support
Bedford Modern School continues to build on its success and is set to move from strength to strength. Our outlook and confidence stems from the vision of our Headmaster, supported by his Governors, together with the sustained achievements of our staff and a reputation for excellence. Our students are accomplished and ready to realise an even greater potential and our alumni have emerged as leaders in all realms of our society. There have been significant improvements to the School’s grounds, buildings and facilities over recent years. Moreover, there have been new builds such as the All Weather Pitches, the Christopher Fry Hall and the extended Junior School, and more recently the Rutherford Building with its Sixth Form Centre and multi-purpose Hall and Refectory and the new Robert Luff Resource & Learning Centre, and new Classrooms. These foundations provide a fine opportunity: with further support and investment we can further realise that vision and ensure that the School is the very best local co-educational school based on the Town School principles that we are so proud of.
We are privileged to be the stewards of Bedford Modern School, to bridge the gap between its historical legacy and its future potential. We are dedicated to expanding the provision of a BMS education for those that might benefit from it together with a mix of vital major capital projects including the development of our Performing Arts facilities, the renewal and resurgence of our Science Faculty, the continuing development of our Art, Information Technology and Design Technology Faculty, and significant enhancements to our sports’ facilities which we hope will include a new indoor hall.
Whilst many schools have built up their endowments over recent years, our links to and support of the Sir William Harpur endowment ensured our ability to allow access to students from families otherwise not able to afford our tuition fees. The movement of the endowment income to local grant making away from the Trust Schools necessitates that we hit the ground running to establish our own funding to offer all the opportunities that we aspire to provide. We will continue to appeal to all those who care about Bedford Modern School and its future to be leaders in our bold fund-raising campaign and by so doing inspire further giving from as wide a community as we are able. We must act now and then continue to act to ensure that BMS is on the soundest of footings for the generations to come.
We will be providing details of our immediate targets for the provision of funds for our Modern Award means tested bursary scheme shortly, but early analysis suggests that we should be seeking to raise ambitious sums of £66.5k in the first year, £133k in year 2, £180k in year 3, £228k in year 4 and £275k in following years not allowing for inflationary pressure. Realistically, it will be very challenging indeed to match these figures but if you don’t ask you ………………………
